Show compassion to your workers and the profits will follow

HERE’S A MODEL that you might want to follow if you employ staff. Called compassionate leadership, this approach suggests that if you put your workers first increased profits will follow.

“A strong focus on people drives strong results, creating the double bottom line,” argues the author Donato Tramuto who has four decades of business leadership experience.

“The double bottom line is the idea that a company can measure its success by producing strong financial results as well as a positive impact on their people and the community at the same time.”

Tramuto is an entrepreneur and former CEO of Tivity Health. He also is founder of the TramutoPorter Foundation and Health eVillages.

Based on research

Tramuto bases his book on research that exposed what he calls a compassionate leadership gap. The survey, conducted among 1,500 U.S. workers, found that most workers do not believe that their leaders are practicing enough compassionate leadership.

Although they believe that a compassionate workforce leads to cooperation—which in turn leads to greater productivity and profitability—most workers believe their workplaces to be more competitive than cooperative.

His research showed, too, that most leaders have an innate desire to be compassionate, but many do not know how to put it into practice.

Perhaps this book will help them do so.

Examples provided

In addition to the results of his research, Tramuto provides examples in his book from high-profile compassionate leaders such as the founder and CEO of Sharecare; founder of WEbMD Jeff Arnold; Thasunda Brown Duckett, president and CEO of TIAA; journalist and entrepreneur Katie Couric; Bruce Broussard, CEO of Humana; Dr. Sandro Galea, dean at Boston University School of Public Health.

All the book’s proceeds will be donated to compassion-driven organizations.
